It is said that history is written with the victor — that in the aftermath of conflict, the defeated tend to be portrayed like a collective, detestable mass that follows an equally repulsive value system. Yet, though his Confederate Army is at the losing end of America’s Civil War, Robert E. Lee is remembered among the most celebrated generals in American history.

Rational ideas of armed conflict presume that defeated soldiers should be denounced, not exalted; punished, not praised; and despised, not admired. However, Lee is entirely in the latter. What made one man, one soldier, stand out that he’s remembered by more Americans today than most of his victorious Union counterparts?

Unfortunately, this is the question that numerous volumes of books have experienced trouble answering. And, I suspect which you have no desire (through this moment, at least) to read content of such depth and breadth (i admit which i cannot write it). Nonetheless, if I needed to describe the reason for Lee’s appeal a single word, it will be “motivation.”

Let me explore this theme poor the subsequent quote:

“There is scarcely any situation that is correct that we cannot wish to accomplish by labor and perseverance. Nevertheless the first have to be earnest along with the second unremitting.”
Robert E. Lee

Earnest Labor

Today’s culture is a through which immediacy is glorified — through the Round-the-clock news cycle; to tarts that “pop” before you pour a glass of milk; to magic diet pills — in ways that you can actually forget that anything worth accomplishing takes earnest labor, that i would define as a serious and purposeful exertion of body, mind and spirit.

For when companies talk about pouring their blood, sweat and tears into their companies, they refer simply to earnest labor.

In the event the craft of the famous musician or star athlete appears to look “easy,” it can be made so through earnest labor.

And, after i attempt to achieve my goal of building a marathon, I am going to agree to one principle: you guessed it, earnest labor.

The ability to learn; the electricity to change; and also the strategies by which goals are accomplished; are controlled through your capacity to give your very best, and to do so earnestly — without reservations (or a magic pill).

Unremitting Perseverance

Lee fought an uphill battle for a lot of the Civil War. His outnumbered and poorly-supplied army shrank daily as a consequence of desertions by disheartened soldiers. Yet, regardless of this, he fought vigorously before moment when defeat was imminent.

How frequently should we give up goals when things aren’t proceeding just as there were anticipated? Do you decide to quit smoking, but then found you needed a tremendous project due in the office, school, or elsewhere? Do you try making a practice of getting out of bed earlier every day, but then slept next day and decided it’s a pointless exercise?

Lee comes with a answer of these, along with other, problems: unremitting perseverance, that we would define as being a steady, unshakable persistence in adhering to an option, belief, or purpose.

While i train for and eventually run the marathon, I realize there would have been a little voice within my head saying to avoid; that it hurts too much to visit one step further. However, my unremitting perseverance in adopting the challenge — all the way to the tip line — will enable me to concentrate and then my footsteps against the pavement; the gentle breeze passing over my ears; and also the rhythm of my breathing — thus pushing that little voice in the depths of my subconscious.

Nevertheless, robert e lee accomplishments is a great example that harboring unremitting perseverance doesn’t ensure victory. After all, he was defeated in war. Yet, during momentary failure, perseverance provides you with the power to obtain back on your metaphorical (or actual) horse and ride into battle (hopefully metaphorical) again, pursuing your ultimate goal using the knowledge that may just be learned through setback.

It is said that history is constructed with the victor; and, in Lee’s case, it is. In capturing the hearts of american citizens, both through his military actions, his personal value system, and his sincere words of wisdom, Robert E. Lee is clearly victorious.
